Should social media data influence hiring decisions?

The use of traditional, subjective methods such as CV screening, individual interviewing and panel interviewing has resulted in the need for more objective and rigorous methods such as the inclusion of pre-screening solutions, psychometric assessments, competency-based interviewing and assessment centres into the selection process.

Even before the war for talent, organisations have been searching for the most efficient and effective ways of selecting new recruits. The use of traditional, subjective methods such as CV screening, individual interviewing and panel interviewing has resulted in the need for more objective and rigorous methods such as the inclusion of pre-screening solutions, psychometric assessments, competency-based interviewing and assessment centres into the selection process. All of the methods mentioned above have been implemented in selection processes across the globe, however some employers do not believe that these methods are enough, as a new selection method has emerged and is already being utilised.

Advanced social media scanning is becoming increasingly utilised as a selection tool as organisations are now utilising agencies that have developed algorithms to scan potential employees' entire social media profiles available on the internet. It is no longer a manual endeavour, nor is it recommended that organisations do this internally due to the potential for bias and unfair discrimination, which is where the services of social media scanning software and agencies come into play. Surveys were conducted amongst potential employees and the results showed that employees still view this form of selection screening as an invasion of privacy, thus creating a dim view of organisations utilising this selection method.
